Jane Helzer

Though a visual artist by profession, Jane has been dancing since she was 2.  First, with her father she danced the Cha Cha Cha connecting her to her Afro-Cuban roots and then with her Russian ballet teacher who she studied under for 13 years.  She grew up experiencing diverse cultures and learned Polynesian, Indian, Native American, and Persian dance forms.  Later, she learned Merengue and Salsa while living in Costa Rica.  In high school, she was on the high school band's pompon squad that performed in the style of Southern African American college bands where she honed in on Hip Hop and other forms of street dance.   In college, she added Modern and Congolese dance to her studies.

In the last few years, Jane has found a wonderful home with the Tree of Life Drum and Dance Society as well as with the tribal belly dance troupe, Nomadic Jewels both of which she has found to be a beautiful synthesis of world dance.

Most recently, Jane is excited to join the Zumba fitness family as an instructor.  She was drawn to Beto Perez' (Columbian dancer and founder of Zumba fitness) enthusiastic approach to providing the general population with access to the celebratory style of world dance.  Jane hopes her classes allow people to transcend the daily grind and experience a taste of other cultures while working on physical fitness.
